Elder Nelson - Auska's Baptism

Dear Family,

The week:
Monday we took Elder Kresge to the airport. He was a visa waiter and after two transfers got his visa. He is a good elder, confident and excited to go to Fiji.

Tuesday was transfer day. We received 18 new missionaries on Monday. Monday night they stayed at a hotel I reserved for them. It is a new hotel, walking distance to the Centreville Stake Center where the transfers take place. It is also about $20/room less expensive than the hotel they used to use. I was responsible for lunch for 70 missionaries. The lunch went smoothly because there are so many helping hands. The new missionaries were assigned their trainers and about 30 missionaries were transferred.

Wednesday we drove three mission cars to the Washington DC North Mission because they needed cars for all of their new missionaries.

That evening we went to an appointment with the Elders. They could not get members from the ward to go because it was Halloween. The appointment was with Auska Kathey, a single sister about 34 years old. We met at the church and went over the baptismal program. She asked Mom and me to give the talks. Mom helped her select baptismal clothing.

Auska is Japanese by birth, but has been here long enough that she talks like a native. Her life seems quite lonely, so I home the church will bring her lots of friends and good things to do.

Thursday I trained a 76 year old service missionary, Sister Cresbrough, how to do some of my assignments. After she takes over some of my assignments, I will have time to help with other things. She works about 3 days per week and is fun to work with. She is very computer savvy and picks up things very quickly. She is delightful. Her husband died not too long ago and she was the general manager for a Sam’s Club for 20 years. We are giving her tasks that we don’t like to do. Mom gave her the Mission Historian responsibility, the vehicle elder is giving her month end reports and I am giving her routine paperwork associated with arriving and departing missionaries. She is very happy to help!

Friday I ordered travel for missionaries leaving in January. There are 14 missionaries going home and I had problems with 4 of them. It is not as easy as it looks.

Saturday we worked on our talks, Mom went shopping, I did some WES things. We went to Burke Lake Park and walked around the lake. The trees are turning colors. It was a beautiful walk.

Auska’s baptism was at 7:00. Mom brought towels and plastic bags for the wet clothes. Mom’s talk was great. It was a variation of the talk on the Holy Ghost she gave at Kate and Anna’s baptism. She even used the Red-Yellow-Green traffic signal. She got the children to help her out. Your Mom is gooood.

10 years ago when we went on our trip to Japan, we became friends with a shop owner named Bill Robertson. He sold his shop about 5 years ago and has been consulting with other shops doing process improvement and process documentation. These skills are exactly what I am looking for at WES. I called him and he is interested in pursuing coming on board. This is a long way from happening, but I hope we can work something out. It would give me much more confidence that WES will be successful. It would give me some peace of mind.

Love,
Dad

Mom and I at Burke Lake. The lake is about three time bigger than shown in this picture. It bends around to the left. You can see the trees turning color in the background. It is prettier in person than in the picture. Not as vibrant as the Northeast, but still pretty.
There must be some good sized fish in the lake. We saw three people fishing, but nobody catching.

Sister Nelson - Transfer Week

Dear Family, Well, this was transfer week and that always makes life interesting. Monday I spent the day getting all of the rent checks printed and mailed. Some of them have changed where they want the checks delivered and I haven’t been able to get them changed in IMOS yet. It is not because I haven’t tried, but I didn’t have time to worry about it this month, so I printed the checks and then typed envelopes manually with the address that needed to be on the checks. We also had missionaries coming into the office to get their exit interviews and that is fun to visit with them. These are missionaries that we have known for almost a year and it is getting harder and harder to see them go home with each transfer. It is, pretty amazing, to compare their pictures of when they came with the people they have become—both physically and spiritually. We are so impressed with the missionaries here. Dad had to leave to go get a 15-passenger van to help pick up the missionaries from the ai...

Elder Nelson - Mt. Vernon

Dear Family, We are still working about 10-hour days, but we now know more of what we are doing. There are still things we don’t know, but those mysteries are much fewer and less frequent than 2 weeks ago. The couple we replaced, Elder and Sister Beus, left September 10, 2018. We arrived October 2, 2018. Before the Beus’ left, the Judson’s came to fill in the breach. They served in the office 5 years ago and kept things going until we came. They have been coming in about 3 times a week to train us and help us out. But we are far enough along that we will now call them only when we are stuck. I am going to run my stuff mostly on the computer. I will still have files but many of them will be on the computer instead of paper files. My calendaring will be done more on the computer. I think in a month or two I will be able to get my current tasks done in 6 hours a day. I will then be able to help out elsewhere or do some creative things. Friday, we got a free Papa John’s pizza. The ...

Sister Nelson - Anniversary and Thanksgiving

Dear Family: This may be short letter because my hands are tired and I know that if I don’t get the letter done today, it will take weeks. This has been a fun, full week. We started this week off bright and early. It was our anniversary and we arrived at the office at 8 am. It was probably because we didn’t stop and fix a lunch but decided to come home and have lunch here. While we were home for lunch, Garn got a phone call from President Caplin asking him if he could arrange for a ride to the airport for one of the sisters. Not wanting to take more of our share of being with the missionaries, Garn called another senior couple to see if they could do it. They had meetings that prevented them from helping out and it was getting close to the time that she needed picking up. We decided to do it ourselves. We called the office to get them to send the travel plans that had come since the time we left the office. We picked her up at her apartment, talked with her companions a mi...
