Elder Nelson - Snow in Virginia

Dear Family,

Mission News
Elder Randall K. Bennett toured the mission. Mom and I were responsible for feeding 130 missionaries
on Tuesday. I got to listen to about 4 hours of the training on Wednesday. Among other things he
talked about ways to help friends (they are not called investigators any more) keep commitments by
asking the friend how the missionaries can help keep the commitment and exactly how they want the
missionaries to help. Helping friends to learn to keep commitments prepares them to make the
baptismal covenant.

He told some good stories about when he was the mission president in Russia and other stories. Stories
are the best.

The mission president asked me to re-write the welcome letter that the mission president sends to the
newly called missionaries and a letter he sends to the recently baptized. I re-wrote them and sent them
to him yesterday. He has not gotten back with me on the letters. I can’t imagine him liking everything
(or perhaps anything). We will see.

We got our first snow on Thursday. They closed the schools. By Friday the roads were mostly dry. The weather was very nice yesterday and today. This picture was taken from out bedroom window in the morning. It snowed most of the day.

Saturday P (Play) Day
I worked on the letters mentioned above and we ran errands. We bought monitors and keyboards for
our laptops. Mom and I have trouble with the laptops because we accidently push or bump things on
the mouse pad. The computer does wild things. So now that problem is solved, and we have 24”
monitors for our old eyes.

We went to a baptism about 30 miles away to do something “fun”. As expected it was a very nice
service. The sister getting baptized was in her 20s. She was cheerful and vivacious. She has lots of
friends in the ward. The fellow that did the baptism (Grant Smith) just returned from serving a mission
in Finland. He knew Taylor Pugmire and said nice things about her. Of course, we had to call the Pugmires and tell them. They are doing well. He had business in New York and Sister Pugmire came to NY to spend time on the weekend. All of the Pugmires are reported to be doing well.

WES
Not much news from WES this week. My engineer friend was busy, and we did not get a chance to talk much. Sales for the month are looking strong. We upgraded our ERP software and our finance software and got a new server. Of course there we some snags, but we are about 95% back.

Family News
Derek and Jessica and Tyler went house hunting yesterday and found one they like. They will go out
tomorrow and look at some more. They plan to make an offer before they come back on Tuesday.
Tyler’s favorite house has a swing on a tree in the back yard. We asked him if he was going to like living in Florida. He said, “Yes!”. Why? “I made friends with the kids in Primary today.”

Chelsea is at Jamie’s and then she will meet Kent in St. George and drive to San Diego to have
Thanksgiving with Derek.

Keri and family had a super fun and safe trip to Oregon. Details are on Facebook.

Love,
Dad

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...

Sister Nelson - 7/28/2019

Dear Family, Here it is another week and almost another month gone by. It has been a good week. Monday we wanted to get the car back in to get the A/C checked. When we had it in on Saturday it didn’t misbehave and it is hard to fix something that doesn’t appear to be broken. After riding in a car without air conditioning for over an hour in 100+ weather on Sunday, Dad was pretty motivated to get it fixed. We drove to the office and it didn’t blow hot air, but neither did it blow cool air. About 10 when things had warmed up a bit, he went out to drive the car to see if the air conditioner was working and it was not. We decided to drive it to the repair shop and hoped it would still not be working by the time we got there. We were lucky—it still didn’t work by the time we got there. Pretty strange to be hoping that our car wouldn’t work, but with the weather as hot and humid as it had been and the promises of all the native Virginians that August was even worse we wanted a depend...
