Elder Nelson - Attending District Counsels

Dear Family,

Mission News
Monday, we had a Senior Missionary going away party for Elder and Sister Bloomfield. They are leaving this coming Tuesday, but they won’t be released for 3 months. The big problem is Sister Bloomfield is the mission nurse and there are no potential mission nurses “in the system”. She will be the mission nurse from Delta, Utah.

Anyway, it is always fun to get together with the senior missionaries.

I attended 3 district council meetings this week which was real treat. The missionaries in general are very open to suggestions and learning. The missionaries are trying hard and most seem to be really enjoying their missions. We seem to be getting a fair amount of baptisms in the Spanish program.

The poise, confidence, leadership and teaching ability these elders and sister have is remarkable. This generation is strong.

In one district council meeting a sister said that they did a door approach and the woman seemed receptive. She asked, “Do you like lesbians?”. The sisters said, “We love lesbians!” The woman invited them in. As they were going in, the woman said, “At least you are not like the Mormons!” The woman had a woman “roommate”. The women invited them back. Our sister missionary asked the missionaries in district council, “What do we do now?” What would you do?

I have a bit of change of assignment. I am now the mission executive secretary. As far as I know now the only difference is that I will be attending the monthly mission presidency meetings and taking minutes.

The junior missionaries in our mission are always thanking the senior missionaries for “all you do”. They must be trained to do that because many missionaries we don’t know thank us. This is not a bad thing.

Here is a note from the sister missionaries that live in the same apartment complex we do. They live in a different building 100 yard from us. (The Spanish elders live in the next building over.) We have had the sister missionaries over for Christmas and “church” last Sunday. They are a bit effusive with their praise, but that’s OK.

Fun Stuff
Saturday, we shopped for a lunch we are doing on Tuesday – Transfer Day. We went to a baptism of Chris, the man that was going to separate from his wife because his wife was joining the Church. After the baptism he came back into the room. Before the meeting continued his 4-year-old daughter climbed up on his lap and said in a voice loud enough for everyone could hear, “Good job, Dad!” It was cute!

We went into the office to do a few things. It is 6:00 and we are going to have dinner and then go shopping for some more stuff for us. We will bake brownies tonight for our neighbor who brushed the snow off our car and scraped our windows after the last snow.

It was supposed to snow today, and the government is shut down, so we decided not to do any sightseeing. It did not snow – just sprinkled a bit.

WES News
Carlos came back from vacation Tuesday. Some good orders came in this week. WES is doing fine. We still have not resolved the software dispute. I think our lawyer botched a negotiation with their lawyer. It may take another week or two to come to a resolution.

Love,
Dad

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...

Sister Nelson - 7/28/2019

Dear Family, Here it is another week and almost another month gone by. It has been a good week. Monday we wanted to get the car back in to get the A/C checked. When we had it in on Saturday it didn’t misbehave and it is hard to fix something that doesn’t appear to be broken. After riding in a car without air conditioning for over an hour in 100+ weather on Sunday, Dad was pretty motivated to get it fixed. We drove to the office and it didn’t blow hot air, but neither did it blow cool air. About 10 when things had warmed up a bit, he went out to drive the car to see if the air conditioner was working and it was not. We decided to drive it to the repair shop and hoped it would still not be working by the time we got there. We were lucky—it still didn’t work by the time we got there. Pretty strange to be hoping that our car wouldn’t work, but with the weather as hot and humid as it had been and the promises of all the native Virginians that August was even worse we wanted a depend...
