Sister Nelson - Happy St. Patrick’s Day

Good Morning,

Here it is another week gone by. Sometimes when I start the week on Monday and look ahead it seems like a long time until the week end again, but before I know it the week has raced by. This has been one of those weeks.

Monday we got to the office a little early because we wanted to be able to be home in time to visit with Derek. He had a business meeting up in the Washington, D.C. area and was able to come and visit Monday evening. What a fun evening for us. What made saying good bye at the end of the evening ok was that he and the family will be coming to visit on Sunday!!

We are trying to get ready for zone conferences this week. For me there isn’t a lot to do, but we have to get someone to watch the office if Dad and I want to go to any of them. The vehicle secretary has to make arrangements to get all of the cars inspected for safety as well as cleanliness. When Dad and I go we get to check the windows (rolling up and down smoothly), mileage, windshield wipers work, tiwi works (this is what records everything that the missionaries do while driving and has improved safety by 90% church wide), horn works, headlights work, parking lights work, front and back blinkers work, brake lights work, and back up lights work. We do this for all of the cars while the other senior couples do other things. We should check our own car as often.

On Monday we found out about a mini transfer that took place over the week end, so we then had to update all of the information and get the right missionaries with the right companions again. That’s what this job is all about—flexibility.

It is time to start getting rent ready to be paid. It seems like I just get it paid, work out the kinks of those checks that don’t get delivered and it’s time to start all over.

Wednesday the zone conferences started and the office was very quiet. I wouldn’t want to work that way all of the time, but once in a while it is so nice to work without interruptions or questions. I get so much more paper work done. Our part time service missionary was in the office and Dad went to a district meeting, so the office was really quiet. In the evening while Dad worked on some WES stuff, I ran an errand. Boy, that can be challenging when I am going to a new place, it is at night with few street lights, and tiny signs that give the names of the streets not the number of the street that is given in google gps. I did make it there and back without making too many detours.

Thursday was another zone conference and we were in the office alone again. I was able to get some reports done in less time because of the lack of interruptions. I spent most of the day getting some utility payments straightened out. There was one apartment who has a 3rd party who reads the meters and bills for the water usage. As I looked at the ledger sent from the apartment complex, I found that we hadn’t been billed for water for the 5 months that I have been here and no notification from the apartment complex that we hadn’t paid the bill. I had been paying the other two utility bills for them, but didn’t know that there was a 3rd. I have got to get visibility of their ledgers so I can monitor this closer.

Friday we went to zone conference and helped with the cars and then went in to learn what the missionaries are being asked to do. We admire the leadership of those missionaries in leadership positions and the faith of the others to follow. We really do have some wonderful, faithful young missionaries here.

We had lunch and the ward in charge of it was a Spanish ward so the food had a Spanish flavor to it and it reminded me of our kids who love this kind of food. Happy memories.

During lunch we were talking with the missionaries who have been teaching our former neighbor that we gave a Book of Mormon to. They reported that they have taught him and that he had gone to Church. They told us that he wasn’t overwhelmed with it, but at least he was there. We hope that he continues to learn.

We needed to get back to the office to get a utility payment delivered today. Dad and I took a trip to get the job done and then came back to get some things done at the office. When we got back to the office we worked for a little while then cleaned the office—if was our turn for that chore.

After dinner we got a call from the office missionaries to see if we could come and help with a teaching appointment. We were happy to do so and it went much better than the last time. We were able to have them tell us what the plan for the lesson was and that was helpful. The little boy was not there this time and that made it easier to teach. Nancy’s 18-year old daughter was there and was very into the lesson. The elders brought a white board and the daughter volunteered to be the drawer for the plan of salvation lesson. That kept her more involved and because she was involved Nancy was more involved. Again, a much better lesson than the week before.

Saturday we went to a baptism of a young man who has no use of his legs. It was wonderful to see how they worked to get the job done, but it seemed wonderful to me that because ordinances are done for individuals we do what it takes to make sure that each individual can have the opportunity to make those covenants. When the baptism was over, the fellow bore a sweet testimony that really touched me. It was a good baptism and reminded me of the importance of each individual making covenants.

On the way home we did our grocery shopping and then got them all put away. We are now a little more ready for company. We needed to buy a light bulb for our dining room so we could see what we were eating and decided we (I) would have a better Sabbath if I would go into the office and get the rent added into the system. We did that and now I am a little more calm inside. I will be able to think about what I should on the Sabbath. I am go grateful that Dad was willing to go with me to do that.

Here we are at Sunday and we are going to meet Derek and family at Church. We need to go a little and save seats for everyone. They have hit some traffic and will be a little late.

Know that we love you all,
Mom

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - New Senior Missionaries and a Party on the Farm

Dear Family, Mission News I spent a fair amount of time preparing for the arrival of two senior couples. They have assignments that are very vague. They don’t really have anyone that supervises their work. The mission president is too busy with the junior missionaries to even know what they are doing. The stake presidents and bishops are likewise preoccupied their high priority responsibilities. Much is left up to the senior missionaries to find and create good things to do. The last two couples that came floundered for a couple of months before they engaged productively in the work. It was very frustrating for them. I am working with the stake presidents under the direction of President Caplin to make sure there is direction and responsibilities for these couples when they arrive. I want them to hit the ground running. I spent about 5-6 hours sending a bike home for an elder that had to go home early. Picking up the bike, helmet and lights from three different location...

Sister Nelson - Baptism

Dear Family, We send our love and support to Amanda and Lance and family. We were sorry to hear of Amanda’s grandmother Kenney on Saturday. She will be happier being with her eternal companion, but she will still me missed a great deal by her family. Know that we love you and are praying for you. It seems that we stay pretty busy, but looking back over the week it’s hard to figure out what took up so much of the time. We got to the office on Monday a little earlier than usual and that gave me a little bit of quiet time to concentrate. Then I spent the entire day trying to get some of the vendors who had changed addresses or had sold their properties to someone else approved and updated. I do the vendor approval so rarely that I still am not comfortable with the process of getting them set up and approved and then set up for payments in IMOS. I also had more calls from the missionaries about when they would be funded than I have had since I got here combined. They would ask if t...
