Elder Nelson - Finding Friends

Dear Family,

Mission News
We attended two baptisms. John a high school teacher from Ethiopia was introduced to the Church while he was working at a 7-11. While engaged in a conversation with a boy on the subject of the Bible, the boy said he would be back in a few minutes. He came back 10 minutes with a Book of Mormon. The boy connected him with the missionaries and the rest is history. A 16 year old priest baptized 40 year old John.

We were asked to take a Hispanic woman from Bolivia to a baptism on Saturday. She wants to get baptized before she goes to back to Bolivia in two weeks. Pablo 50 years old or so was baptized by his son-in-law. We did not understand the words of the service, but we surely felt the spirit.

3 of our visa-waiters got their visas approved, but more paperwork needs to be done. Hopefully they will go the end of next week.

We got some new assistants to the president. They were in the president’s office when the mission president’s wife came in. She wanted a picture with her and the new APs. The new AP said that the mission president was busy, and the picture could be taken later. Sister Caplin said, “Oh, let’s take a picture anyway.” She handed the camera to President Caplin, who with a big smile on his face took the picture. I told the AP that he was just taught a very important lesson on Church government.

I invited the zone leaders to come give us training on how the office missionaries can find people for the missionaries to teach. They did a fine job.

The next day a man (David) came to the door with a brochure for a Japanese restaurant down the street. I began talking with him about what we do in the mission office. Mom came in and joined the conversation. Elder Larsen joined us. Then the 3 office elders came in. He was way out numbered. Yesterday while we were at Pablo’s baptism, Elder and Sister Larsen took the missionaries to lunch with the three office elders. They had a good conversation with David.

Elder Downs, our vehicle coordinator got in a discussion with a customer at Pep Boys. This customer said he would come by the office and pick up a Portuguese Book of Mormon.

Elder Larsen, the housing coordinator, was out at one of the apartments where missionaries used to live. He struck up a conversation with the receptionist. She said, “I miss those young ladies. They had such a glow about them.” Elder Larsen said, “You ought to go to Church with those young ladies.” She said, “I think I will.” The Senior Office Missionaries are trying to get more friends for our missionaries to teach.

The mission president asked me to do the departing interviews for the three visa waiters that are leaving Monday. That will be fun.

We got a report from Salt Lake about mobile device usage in our mission. It is apparent that not all missionaries are using their devices wisely. President Caplin asked me to make this my primary assignment to create a culture of willing obedience to rules of mobile device usage.

Fun Stuff
We completed taxes on Saturday. Life does not get more fun than that.

Our window on the back driver’s side broke and it was $624 to fix it.

Onion “Omelet” is a breakfast weekend regular.

WES News
I make a proposal to partner to buy some of his shares. We will see how that goes.

This week we got some good sized orders.

Family News
After a telephone conversation with Kent, Elizabeth tearfully told Keri that she missed Uncle Kent.

Mom’s hot already. It is in the 70’s now. It will be a very long summer.

Love,
Dad

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - New Senior Missionaries and a Party on the Farm

Dear Family, Mission News I spent a fair amount of time preparing for the arrival of two senior couples. They have assignments that are very vague. They don’t really have anyone that supervises their work. The mission president is too busy with the junior missionaries to even know what they are doing. The stake presidents and bishops are likewise preoccupied their high priority responsibilities. Much is left up to the senior missionaries to find and create good things to do. The last two couples that came floundered for a couple of months before they engaged productively in the work. It was very frustrating for them. I am working with the stake presidents under the direction of President Caplin to make sure there is direction and responsibilities for these couples when they arrive. I want them to hit the ground running. I spent about 5-6 hours sending a bike home for an elder that had to go home early. Picking up the bike, helmet and lights from three different location...

Sister Nelson - Baptism

Dear Family, We send our love and support to Amanda and Lance and family. We were sorry to hear of Amanda’s grandmother Kenney on Saturday. She will be happier being with her eternal companion, but she will still me missed a great deal by her family. Know that we love you and are praying for you. It seems that we stay pretty busy, but looking back over the week it’s hard to figure out what took up so much of the time. We got to the office on Monday a little earlier than usual and that gave me a little bit of quiet time to concentrate. Then I spent the entire day trying to get some of the vendors who had changed addresses or had sold their properties to someone else approved and updated. I do the vendor approval so rarely that I still am not comfortable with the process of getting them set up and approved and then set up for payments in IMOS. I also had more calls from the missionaries about when they would be funded than I have had since I got here combined. They would ask if t...
