Elder Nelson - Transfer Week

Dear Family,

Mission News
Monday we took Elder Spencer to the airport. He is off to the Ukraine.

Tuesday we (mainly Sister Chesbrough) fed the new missionaries a macaroni bar lunch. It was delicious. Everybody loved it.

Macaroni Bar – It was very good!

Sister Chesbrough-my super helper, who loves to cook, Sister Downs-mission nurse, Elder Downs-vehicle coordinator.
We had 2 visa waiters stay the night with us on Tues-Thursday. We took them to the consulate in Washington DC and had a 10 minute meeting with the Ambassador from Ecuador.

This was a stressful week with the phones. A lot of phones got switched around. Phones had technical problems. One phone was run over by a car. Another was lost. It took me 4 days to get SIM card activated for one set of missionaries that needed a new phone.

There was an incident that appeared to clearly show that some missionaries were accessing sites that they shouldn’t. But after 5 hours of investigation including talking with the missionaries who had used the phone, I concluded there was no “unsafe” behavior. The software on the phone was the source of the problem. That discovery made my day!

Fun Stuff
Saturday I slept in and took a couple of naps. That felt good. We also went for an hour walk in the woods.

WES News
We passed our ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 audits with no findings.

My partner has not responded to my proposal yet. I guess he did not like it.

Family News
Lance’s family had a great spring break at the Ranch with Amanda’s twin Matt and his family. Amanda caught her first fish ever at the Ranch. Emma was a speed demon on the “mule”.

Keri went to Emily’s wedding in San Diego with Maggie. She had a wonderful time.
Emily is holding the bouquet, Keri and Maggie are in the middle, on the ends are former roommates Abby and Ashley with her son Wyatt.
Love,
Dad

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...

Sister Nelson - 7/28/2019

Dear Family, Here it is another week and almost another month gone by. It has been a good week. Monday we wanted to get the car back in to get the A/C checked. When we had it in on Saturday it didn’t misbehave and it is hard to fix something that doesn’t appear to be broken. After riding in a car without air conditioning for over an hour in 100+ weather on Sunday, Dad was pretty motivated to get it fixed. We drove to the office and it didn’t blow hot air, but neither did it blow cool air. About 10 when things had warmed up a bit, he went out to drive the car to see if the air conditioner was working and it was not. We decided to drive it to the repair shop and hoped it would still not be working by the time we got there. We were lucky—it still didn’t work by the time we got there. Pretty strange to be hoping that our car wouldn’t work, but with the weather as hot and humid as it had been and the promises of all the native Virginians that August was even worse we wanted a depend...
