Elder Nelson - Happy Birthday Olivia and Malia, Congratulations Emma and Sarah

Dear Family,

Mission NewsI visited 5 missionaries to discuss using technology wisely. This a bit uncomfortable to me, because I am not now a judge in Israel. My approach has been soft and focused on helping all missionaries enjoy the Spirit.

I wrote a mission plan for creating a culture of using technology righteously and sent it to the mission president for his review on Saturday. It is not an elaborate plan. There are 4 sections to the plan
  1. Teach correct principles
  2. Prevention which includes always make your screen visible to your companion and always have your companion view texts, emails and Face Book communication before you send it.
  3. Deterrence – Device audits by companions and mission leaders
  4. Responsibilities of the Senior missionary responsible for “technology”
Friday evening we were asked to meet Sister Carroll and Sister Lyons as they were giving a tour of the church and discussion. As we were driving to the church building the missionaries called and said that a former investigator was going to be their too. This sister has severe mental and emotional challenges. They asked if Mom would spend time with her so they could focus on this other friend. She did and I went with the Isaiah and the sister missionaries. Isaiah is about 40 and has had a tough life including some time in prison. Emotionally is an adolescent. I am not sure how well he will be able to understand the gospel.

Saturday we went to a baptism of a 14 year old Korean girl. She was shy and felt very uncomfortable about everybody watching her as she was baptized. She almost chickened out. Mom and the sister missionaries, Sister Smith and Sister Wiscombe, talked with her. But her friends arrived and encouraged her enough to continue with the baptism. It was pleasing to see how the young women in the ward rallied around her to support her.

One of the fun things about this baptism was that 3 other sets of missionaries were there with their friends (investigators). 4 friends.

Fun Stuff
Saturday I was walking to get to the woods I saw a deer a few feet from the trail. She was not afraid or nervous. We were about 50 yards from a little league baseball field where they were practicing. Our neighbor said the deer are so tame that you can even pet them sometimes. I have talked with a few people said that the deer are terrible about eating from their vegetable and flower gardens.

WES News
Not much new since last week. We are still trying to get enough work in the shop to minimize our losses for the next few months. I have started looking for potential buyers

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...

Sister Nelson - 7/28/2019

Dear Family, Here it is another week and almost another month gone by. It has been a good week. Monday we wanted to get the car back in to get the A/C checked. When we had it in on Saturday it didn’t misbehave and it is hard to fix something that doesn’t appear to be broken. After riding in a car without air conditioning for over an hour in 100+ weather on Sunday, Dad was pretty motivated to get it fixed. We drove to the office and it didn’t blow hot air, but neither did it blow cool air. About 10 when things had warmed up a bit, he went out to drive the car to see if the air conditioner was working and it was not. We decided to drive it to the repair shop and hoped it would still not be working by the time we got there. We were lucky—it still didn’t work by the time we got there. Pretty strange to be hoping that our car wouldn’t work, but with the weather as hot and humid as it had been and the promises of all the native Virginians that August was even worse we wanted a depend...
