Elder Nelson - New Projects

Dear Family,

Mission NewsThe most fun part of the week was attending the baptism of three people yesterday. One sister is a young lady from Bolivia. There also was a mother and 11 year old daughter from Mongolia. There was a wonderful spirit their and the sisters were welcomed warmly by the members of the ward. At the end of the service they asked these sisters to bear their testimony. All three testimonies were good, but we enjoyed the 11 year old girls the best. She was humble and also poised and confident.

A sister attended the baptism that Mom and I counselled with 6 weeks ago. She kind of remembered me, but she really remembered Mom and she gave her a big hug.

I took an elder to airport on short notice. He has some sort of worthiness issue. Hopefully he will return in several months.

I went to a district council in the Spanish speaking Sudley district. There was a good spirit in the meeting and some good learning taking place. I enjoy those meetings.

President Caplin spend more time with Mom and me this week than in all of the previous weeks. He looks to me to organize the senior missionaries, because he has no time left over after he does all that needs to be done with the junior missionaries. I have three projects.

Change the “bike” culture. Some missionaries ride bikes that are unsafe. Many missionaries don’t maintain the bikes. Some missionaries don’t have bikes and then have to scramble to get bikes at transfer time.

President Caplin wants the elders that have cars to use bikes or walk as often as possible. Missionaries meet people easier when they are on bikes or walking than when they are in a car.

Our office elders spend 30 or more hours in the office each week. President Caplin wants to reduce the time to less than 10 hours. That means the senior couples will need to do some of the work they have been doing.

I am also assisting him to find a good spot for the two new senior couples coming to the mission in September. They are MLS – Member, Leader Support. MLS couple really help out in Brazil, the Philippines or Africa where the Church is growing rapidly and the members and leaders are very new. However, the Church is very well established and the wards are strong. There is much less for MLS missionaries to do. I am trying to help the mission president find a place where they can serve and make a difference. The couples are coming are very strong and experienced. It would be a shame if we could not find a good place for them to contribute.

We took our friend David to the correctional facility to do his weekly check-in on Thursday. He is making a changes. He also attends Church – about 5 weeks straight. Yesterday the elders said they had a good lesson with him on Saturday. This is his first real lesson with the missionaries. I am pleased with his progress so far. He has a very, very long way to go, but he is on his way.

This coming week is transfer week – it will be busy!

Fun StuffThere are two sets of sister missionaries that live in our apartment complex. When their mail comes in, we text them “You have mail” and they stop by in the evening. This gives us a chance to visit with them. They came by 3 times this week which more that usual. One sister that we like a lot went home on Friday because anxiety issues. We mostly like the junior missionaries a lot.

Monday we took elders to the airport that had to leave their missions a week early to get into school. Three of them plan to study engineering and one is planning to be a doctor. Two of them play in the marching band at BYU and must learn all of their music in a week. Sharp, happy elders who served faithfully.

I delivered mail to the Annandale and McLean zones on Tuesday.

Elder Larry C. Wilson of the Seventy will become emeritus this next conference. He is moving to McLean because they have three children in the area. He grew up in the same ward as Mom in Pocatello. His mother was a wonderful pianist. When he was a kid, he would crawl under the grand piano and listen to his mother play. Uncle Terry was his scout master. He played for the brethren of the Seventy for their meetings.

WES NewsWe learned that we will probably get the $420,000 job that we bid last week. However the $1,400,000 job will go to someone with a much lower bid. The good news is that we will not have to buy a new machine to do the work.

Carlos is quoting a lot of new work for several different companies. If most of it comes in, we will be swamped. If most of it does not come in, we will be in big trouble. August will be a bad month.

I didn’t do much WES work this week.

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...

Sister Nelson - 7/28/2019

Dear Family, Here it is another week and almost another month gone by. It has been a good week. Monday we wanted to get the car back in to get the A/C checked. When we had it in on Saturday it didn’t misbehave and it is hard to fix something that doesn’t appear to be broken. After riding in a car without air conditioning for over an hour in 100+ weather on Sunday, Dad was pretty motivated to get it fixed. We drove to the office and it didn’t blow hot air, but neither did it blow cool air. About 10 when things had warmed up a bit, he went out to drive the car to see if the air conditioner was working and it was not. We decided to drive it to the repair shop and hoped it would still not be working by the time we got there. We were lucky—it still didn’t work by the time we got there. Pretty strange to be hoping that our car wouldn’t work, but with the weather as hot and humid as it had been and the promises of all the native Virginians that August was even worse we wanted a depend...
