Elder Nelson - New Senior Missionaries and Red Bow Ties

Dear Family,

Mission NewsWe had a meeting called by President Dionne of the Gainesville Stake to orient Elder and Sister Vennard to their assignment as Member, Leader Support missionaries the Stake. This stake is doing a lot of community outreach like Just Serve and inviting the community to come the Church to learn how to do genealogy. This is a very large stake geographically and there are a number of members that are less active because they have to drive so far to Church.

During the discussion the high councilor asked if the Vennards had feeling on how they should serve. Elder Vennard told their conversion story. They married and completing their 3rd year of college when they met the missionaries. After about the 4th discussion he decided he really needed to know if this was true. He fasted for 3 days and while his wife was away, he prayed for what ended up being 6 hours. As he was praying he felt a warm peaceful feeling and even though he had his eye’s closed he could tell that the room was filling with light. This went on for some time.

At the next discussion one of the missionaries said he felt prompted to share a scripture that Elder Vennard need to hear. It was D&C 9:8 saying that you will have a burning in your bosom and “you will feel that it is right.” That was a confirmation to him that he had received answer to his prayer.

At the MTC senior couples have a chance to teach each other 2 on 2. A couple was teaching the Vennards and the elder said. I don’t know why, but I feel I need to share a scripture with you. This scripture was not related to the topic they were teaching. The scripture was D&C 9:8. This was a witness to Elder and Sister Vennard that the Lord knows them and they are going to the exact place the Lord wants them to go.

I came up with an idea asking Bishop Williams of the Wakefield Ward – the ward Mom and I attend – to encourage members to invite their friends to “Come and see” and “Come and help”. He got excited about the idea and sent an email to the ward council to do invite friends into their homes and report back at the next ward council.

We then did the same with the bishop of the ward that shares the building with our ward, it was not a successful. He converted to the Church when he was 19 and served a mission when he was 22. He baptized 89 people on his mission. He was very frustrated that after 3 years as bishop they have had only 2 convert baptisms – two nine year old children. He is a great member missionary himself and invites lots of people to Church and various Church activities. His ward does a good job of inviting people too. His 64 temple recommend holding youth bring friends to mutual all of the time. Despite all of this good inviting, baptisms are few.

He expressed that the stake president has asked him why they don’t have more baptisms in their ward. He is trying hard, but we not “getting people wet”.

Fun StuffAfter the meeting with President Dionne and the Vennards, we stopped by the Seely’s to return their jar that they gave us full of raw milk. With only a little persuasion we accepted another 2 quart jar of raw milk.

Last week we attended a baptism in Woodbridge 1 ward. The bishop, an African, was dressed in white when we got there because he performed the baptism. After the baptism we was dressed in a nice black suite and a BRIGHT red tie and BRIGHT red socks. This bishop’s smile was equally as BRIGHT and on him, the tie and socks looked great.

WES NewsI have been talking to another shop owner about buying WES. His price was way low, so I gave up on him. But he came back with price very near my asking price. We have agreed on the terms and my lawyer is drawing up the agreement.

The reason we want to sell is the WES has had two bad months the next two months are not going to be good. I think by the end of the year sales will be up and things will be good. However, we are not sure. WES could go under. So following the old adage, “A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush” we went forward. The deal should close on September 30.

This feels like a good decision.

Elder Nelson - New Senior Missionaries and a Party on the Farm

Dear Family, Mission News I spent a fair amount of time preparing for the arrival of two senior couples. They have assignments that are very vague. They don’t really have anyone that supervises their work. The mission president is too busy with the junior missionaries to even know what they are doing. The stake presidents and bishops are likewise preoccupied their high priority responsibilities. Much is left up to the senior missionaries to find and create good things to do. The last two couples that came floundered for a couple of months before they engaged productively in the work. It was very frustrating for them. I am working with the stake presidents under the direction of President Caplin to make sure there is direction and responsibilities for these couples when they arrive. I want them to hit the ground running. I spent about 5-6 hours sending a bike home for an elder that had to go home early. Picking up the bike, helmet and lights from three different location...

Sister Nelson - Happy Birthday Olivia and Malia

Dear Family, Another good week has raced by with birthdays, transfers, teaching with the missionaries, and baptisms. And I am sitting here trying to remember everything. Monday was a long day. Garn was out talking with missionaries talking about their phones and usage. He has been tasked with coming up with a mission plan for the wise/righteous use of technology as well as checking with the missionaries about their device usage as it shows up on the reports from Salt Lake. It has been a fast learning curve going from knowing how to makes phone calls, texting, checking emails etc. to knowing how to conduct audits of the phones, transfer sim cards from phone to phone, find lost data, and fix broken phones. I was trying to get bills with problems paid, our senior dinner assignments for the mission home get together sent out, and answering the front office phone. Tuesday was another office day. We were trying to things ready for zone conferences. We take all of the mail for the zones...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...
