Elder Nelson - Fun with Siblings

Dear Family,

Mission News
The big event of week was Elder Bennett, our area president, spoke to the missionaries on Friday. Mom got to see it, but I had to watch the office. Mom said it was really good.

An elder that was serving in the Pittsburg Mission came home early for medical problems. The plan is to have him serve a service mission. We will probably use him a couple of days a month. He will be serving in the community helping the homeless on Tuesday and Thursday. He will be working on the temple grounds Monday and Saturday. On the 2nd and 4th Fridays he will work in the Philadelphia Temple. He will do something in our mission on the 1st and 3rd Fridays. I hope he can serve with the full time missionaries.

We did lunch for the return and report on Tuesday.

The car was low on oil – 2+ quarts. I took the car into the shop to find out where the oil was going. They could not determine where the oil was going. I hope our car lasts a couple more years.

There is a neighborhood internet site in an area in our mission. There have been reports of missionaries tracting at 10:30 at night. Of course our missionaries in the area claim they were not tracting so late. That raises the specter of someone impersonating the missionaries. Both seem unlikely. We tell our missionaries not to tract after 8:00.

The two senior missionaries that recently came to the mission are doing a great job of reactivating and finding people for the missionaries to teach.

Fun Stuff
Phil, Janie and Jane came for a visit for the week. Mom and I were party poopers and did not go with them on their adventures during the day. But we did enjoy them in the evenings. One night we played Coup and Jane and Janie won. I think Mom and I were too aggressive at challenging.

Janie made us a beautiful Christmas Tree. It is prettier in real life than this picture.
It was really fun to be with them. I miss our monthly sibling get togethers. It was good to “get caught up” and do few things together.

Saturday we visited the Museum of the Bible. It was a fun exhibit. It was kind of high tech. There were several good videos and displays. We even passed through the Red Sea on dry ground. There are 7 floors and we made it to 3.5 floors in 5 hours. One floor had old renaissance paintings the “told” bible stories. People at the time did not have bibles and could not read so painting communicated the stories.

Another floor had fiber optic light art on the apocalypse – not so interesting.

On another floor they had a presentation of the old testament, the new testament and a large room that showed what life was like in Palestine in New Testament time. Another floor had histories of various bibles that started appearing from about the time of Martin Luther on. Both of these floors were very interesting.

WES News
We made good progress on switching WES customers to Accurate Technology customers this week. Hopefully my “job” will be winding down.

Family News
My cousin, Scott McNeil passed away yesterday. He is Aunt Anne’s 2nd son. He suffered a debilitating stroke awhile back and the quality of his life was very poor for over a year. His funeral service is next Saturday.

Emma turned 14! She attends seminary and high school. She is really old. I love my really old granddaughter! (I love all my younger grandchildren too!)
Love you all,
Dad

PS This letter is three weeks old. Mom and I will try to get caught up soon.

Elder Nelson - New Senior Missionaries and a Party on the Farm

Dear Family, Mission News I spent a fair amount of time preparing for the arrival of two senior couples. They have assignments that are very vague. They don’t really have anyone that supervises their work. The mission president is too busy with the junior missionaries to even know what they are doing. The stake presidents and bishops are likewise preoccupied their high priority responsibilities. Much is left up to the senior missionaries to find and create good things to do. The last two couples that came floundered for a couple of months before they engaged productively in the work. It was very frustrating for them. I am working with the stake presidents under the direction of President Caplin to make sure there is direction and responsibilities for these couples when they arrive. I want them to hit the ground running. I spent about 5-6 hours sending a bike home for an elder that had to go home early. Picking up the bike, helmet and lights from three different location...

Sister Nelson - Happy Birthday Olivia and Malia

Dear Family, Another good week has raced by with birthdays, transfers, teaching with the missionaries, and baptisms. And I am sitting here trying to remember everything. Monday was a long day. Garn was out talking with missionaries talking about their phones and usage. He has been tasked with coming up with a mission plan for the wise/righteous use of technology as well as checking with the missionaries about their device usage as it shows up on the reports from Salt Lake. It has been a fast learning curve going from knowing how to makes phone calls, texting, checking emails etc. to knowing how to conduct audits of the phones, transfer sim cards from phone to phone, find lost data, and fix broken phones. I was trying to get bills with problems paid, our senior dinner assignments for the mission home get together sent out, and answering the front office phone. Tuesday was another office day. We were trying to things ready for zone conferences. We take all of the mail for the zones...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...
