Elder Nelson - Ralph Mize and President Ballard Devotional

Dear Family,

Mission NewsIt was a relatively “quiet” week and that gave me some time to do projects: updating five of the about ten form letters for arriving and departing missionaries, created a mission bike policy, revised the logistics for taking departing missionaries to the airport. I still have some little projects to do.

Monday we had our almost weekly Senior District Council. Mom shared some things she discussed with Sister Caplin about the Persian emphasis in the Church. It seems that the Church feels that many of the Persians are ready for the Gospel. About 40 Persians and their friends met with Elder Randall Bennett last Sunday and talked about how the Church can strengthen the Persian community in our area. Our second Persian speaking elder arrives on Monday. Two more are planned to come.

Saturday we enjoyed a Devotional given by President Ballard and Elder Christofferson. The broadcast came from Sharon Vermont and was sent to the 19 missions in the North America North East Area. I liked all of the talks, but I really like President Ballard. He was like a grandfather talking to his grandchildren.

Among other things they said forget yourself and serve the people. Learn the Gospel, love the Gospel and share it eloquently and with confidence. T

Fun StuffMonday evening the seniors got together and had a pot luck dinner at one of the apartments. They are good people to be around.

Ralph Mize came in time for dinner Thursday night after spending much of the day at the National Archives doing family history. He came to the office Friday morning and did a few things for me – sorting the mail and proofing some form letters I updated. He took us to lunch and went on to a genealogy seminar in Maryland.

BYU beat Boise State – Our 3rd string quarterback was better than their 2nd string quarterback. No I did not stay up to listen to the game. The game started at my bedtime.

WES NewsTransitioning WES customers to Accurate Technology was a time consuming task that I spent a lot of time on last week. I spent several hours a day working at this. Unfortunately we are only about half done with the task. Hopefully this will be behind us in a couple of weeks.

Family NewsKeri and family fun time with Derek and family last week end.

Keri and Chelsea had a “blast” at Lindsey’s bridal shower.
Phil, Janie and Jane are coming this morning about 10:30 in time for our 11:30 Church. They fly back next Sunday.

13 days from today we will all be together for Lindsey and Kent’s wedding. It doesn’t get any better than that!
Love you all,
Dad

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...

Sister Nelson - 7/28/2019

Dear Family, Here it is another week and almost another month gone by. It has been a good week. Monday we wanted to get the car back in to get the A/C checked. When we had it in on Saturday it didn’t misbehave and it is hard to fix something that doesn’t appear to be broken. After riding in a car without air conditioning for over an hour in 100+ weather on Sunday, Dad was pretty motivated to get it fixed. We drove to the office and it didn’t blow hot air, but neither did it blow cool air. About 10 when things had warmed up a bit, he went out to drive the car to see if the air conditioner was working and it was not. We decided to drive it to the repair shop and hoped it would still not be working by the time we got there. We were lucky—it still didn’t work by the time we got there. Pretty strange to be hoping that our car wouldn’t work, but with the weather as hot and humid as it had been and the promises of all the native Virginians that August was even worse we wanted a depend...
