Sister Nelson - Pie Night and Zone Conference

Dear Family,

Another week has raced by and I am trying to recap the events of the week. It has been a good week. I have been able to get a few of the things hanging over my head taken care of and am only a little under water.

Monday was the evening for our monthly senior missionary get together. One of the couples had a family tradition to have a pie night just prior to Thanksgiving. They had found out that after a large Thanksgiving meal they were often too full to enjoy dessert. At first they decided to have their pie night the night before Thanksgiving, but they discovered that that was too much to have two days of big eating. Pie night was changed to Monday evening and soup was added to the menu. People were free to eat only soup, only pie, or a combination. They could take a tiny piece of many of the pies or take a big slice of their favorite. I think they told us the most they ever had was 24-27 pies. I was asked to bring soup since they knew I wasn’t into pies, and the rest brought pies. We didn’t have as many as our friends’ family, but there were pumpkin, berry, cheese cake, pecan, apple, lemon meringue, and even a vegetable pie. I think we ended up with 12-15 pies. Anyway, we had a good time enjoying each other’s company and were grateful that the trip home took half as long as the trip there took.

Tuesday was the beginning of zone conference. Because of tradition or the jobs we have in the office, we can go to zone conference only if we can find someone to come and watch the office, so often we go to only one of the three. There are some good things that come from our not going to zone conference and the others going—the office is quieter with fewer distractions. Usually I am able to get much more done this way, but the days do seem so much longer when we are there by ourselves. That added to the early of the hour when it gets dark makes the days seem so much longer. It starts to get dark around 3:30 and so it feels like it is 5:00 pm long before it really is. I don’t think we are any further north of Santa Clara, but there are a lot more clouds in the sky here making it darker most of the time.

Wednesday was another zone conference and we had he office to ourselves again. I spent the day getting the rent checks printed and mailed. That seems to be an all-day job. A couple of the checks printed with the wrong payee. After talking with Salt Lake, I found that they weren’t quite sure why that happened, but probably another mission got a new apartment with the same vendor and in the process of adding/changing their vendor payee, it changed mine. I was able to call the center who collects this vendor’s checks and ask them to watch for this check and cash it, but to apply the funds to the correct apartment complex and not the one listed on the check. Good thing they deal with both apartment complexes and had authority to cash both checks. Also, it was a good thing that I caught the mistake.

In the late afternoon we went to get my hands x-rayed in hopes of figuring out what course of action the doctor needs to take. The traffic was a lot heavier than we thought it would be so we didn’t get back before closing time of the office. When we got home we got a call from President Caplin asking us if we could take an elder to the airport the next day. We had planned to go to zone conference, but this needed to be done, so we will take care of that.

Friday we went into the office, then Dad got a mission car and drove to the apartment of the elders where one was going home. He took both elders and the luggage of the one going home and drove to the apartment of the elders that would be making up the new trio. I drove our car to the 2nd apartment and picked up Dad and the elder going home. We went to the airport and the three elders had a car and were going to be working in the area where the first apartment was located. We had a nice visit with the elder and he shared his conversion story with us. We are hopeful that he gets better soon and will be back quickly. We were able to get back to the office by 11 with everyone delivered where they were supposed to be.

Friday was a busy day. It seems we are getting new apartments to get them better aligned in the areas they are serving. That is a pain in the neck for me because we have to verify the new vendors and I seldom have an easy time doing that.

The lady we ready the Book of Mormon with wanted to take us out to dinner to say thanks for being there for her. It has been a rough year because of the death of her husband last October. We met her at the restaurant before the crowds got there and had some of the best food I have eaten at a restaurant in a LONG time. It was a wonderful evening—not only was the food good, but the company was nice as well.

On Saturday we went to a baptism for a girl that has been taught by the sisters (previously) and the elders who live in our apartment complex. On one of the evenings when the elders came to get their mail we were talking about recent baptism and the low water level causing the people to have to be baptized several times. Dad was teasing Elder Nielsen about making sure he didn’t have to do it multiple times. The baptism had to be held in the chapel because there were so many people from the ward there to support her and there wasn’t enough room for everyone to have a seat. We walked back to the baptistry and stood while the actual baptism was done. The mom was one of the witnesses and the other witness was a sister missionary who had been teaching her just prior to her transfer out. I think it makes it special to have people who are important to the one being baptized doing the witnessing. The sister missionary, I think, was being extra careful and didn’t think the girl was completely submerged. Both Dad and I did, but it wasn’t our call. She had to be baptized again. Dad said he felt like he may have jinxed Elder Neilsen. It was a good baptism and fun to be there with good people.

After the baptism we went grocery shopping for cesar salad supplies. We had a dinner appointment tomorrow that we needed ingredients to make it.

Sunday was a good church meeting and some thoughtful questions asked in the Relief Society lesson. Dad spent a little time at the office getting the agenda ready for the Mission Presidency meeting that was to be at 7:30 p.m. Our dinner appointment was for 4:30 at the Carliles. They are so good to invite us every month.

The presidency meeting ended up being a zoom meeting and Dad did it from the extra bedroom, so I was unable to get to my computer to finish this letter. Thus the excuse for the late letter. I will try to get caught up.

Love you lots,
Mom

Elder Nelson - The Calm Before Transfers

Dear Family, Mission News We took Elder Miller to the airport yesterday. He is a fine missionary that is going home for health issues. Later we went to the baptism of Lucy, a friendly, happy woman from Brazil. She was married Wednesday to her companion of 30 years or so. Her husband, Patrick will probably be baptized in the next few weeks. It was a very nice service and she is loved by many members. Sister Caplin, Sister Bourgeous, Lucy, Antonia (Lucy’s Baziian friend) Elder and Sister Nelson, Sister Kirk I completed my survey of stake high councilors. It was fun to feel their enthusiasm for the work and learn of their innovative ideas for moving the work along. Finally I got the program for inviting new converts to write their conversion stories restarted. Friday 4 sisters and their companions came in for their departing interviews with President Caplin. That shoots down getting anything done for much of the day. However, it is always a lot of fun to be with the young miss...

Sister Nelson - Happy Birthday Olivia and Malia

Dear Family, Another good week has raced by with birthdays, transfers, teaching with the missionaries, and baptisms. And I am sitting here trying to remember everything. Monday was a long day. Garn was out talking with missionaries talking about their phones and usage. He has been tasked with coming up with a mission plan for the wise/righteous use of technology as well as checking with the missionaries about their device usage as it shows up on the reports from Salt Lake. It has been a fast learning curve going from knowing how to makes phone calls, texting, checking emails etc. to knowing how to conduct audits of the phones, transfer sim cards from phone to phone, find lost data, and fix broken phones. I was trying to get bills with problems paid, our senior dinner assignments for the mission home get together sent out, and answering the front office phone. Tuesday was another office day. We were trying to things ready for zone conferences. We take all of the mail for the zones...

Sister Nelson - Transfer Week

Dear Family, Well, this was transfer week and that always makes life interesting. Monday I spent the day getting all of the rent checks printed and mailed. Some of them have changed where they want the checks delivered and I haven’t been able to get them changed in IMOS yet. It is not because I haven’t tried, but I didn’t have time to worry about it this month, so I printed the checks and then typed envelopes manually with the address that needed to be on the checks. We also had missionaries coming into the office to get their exit interviews and that is fun to visit with them. These are missionaries that we have known for almost a year and it is getting harder and harder to see them go home with each transfer. It is, pretty amazing, to compare their pictures of when they came with the people they have become—both physically and spiritually. We are so impressed with the missionaries here. Dad had to leave to go get a 15-passenger van to help pick up the missionaries from the ai...
