Elder Nelson - "Why Can't a Woman Be More Like a Man?" My Fair Lady

Dear Family,

Mission NewsSunday Night at 9:15 we got a call from the Sisters missionaries that serve in our ward. They were stranded about 5 miles away. We picked them up at a gas station. When they got into our car I asked, “Sisters, why are you stranded? Did you get your car towed?” They had an 8:00 appointment and when they came out their car had been towed away. This happens a few times a month to missionaries. These towing companies contract with apartment managers to keep their parking lot free from unauthorized vehicles. Some senior missionaries have had their cars towed too.

We drove the sisters to the towing company parking lot. While the sisters were paying their $185 fee, Sister Stout visited with the lady that was taking their money. They talked about working there, where she lived and how long the lived there. The transaction took several minutes. As the lady handed Sister Stout the receipt, Sister Stout asked if she was busy and what she was doing that night. The lady said she was going to read. Sister Stout asked if she could leave a book with her that taught about Jesus Christ. She told the lady about the Book of Mormon and how it taught about Jesus. The lady said, “He is with me all of the time.” Sister Stout replied, “Good. They you will really like this book.” She bore her testimony of the Book of Mormon and gave it to her with a pass-along card with their contact information on it.

She also gave a pass-along card to tow truck driver on the way out. She asked if he was busy. He said things were a little slow. She reached through the window and gave him a pass-along card. She said, “Here is a picture of Jesus that will help your night go better.”

It was wonderful. It all seemed so normal and natural. When I try to do things like that it doesn’t feel so normal and natural. Sister Stout was great.

I am calling the High Councilors over the missionaries to talk with them about what’s working in their wards and stake. I talked with 3 of them. Our conversations lasted an hour because they were so excited to share their thoughts. They were fun phone calls. I will report on them later.

Saturday we went to the baptism of a young woman who has been attending Church and seminary for about a year. Her mother was not excited about her joining the Church. As they planned the baptism service, she suggested that the young women and young men do everything – talks, musical numbers and music. The youth did a wonderful job. As you would expect there were around 100 people who attended the service.

Mom spoke in Church today on missionary work. She had to cut her talk down because of time. But as usual she spoke well and comfortably. She can relax a little now.

Fun Stuff
Tuesday it started snowing very hard about 1:00. We decided to leave around 3:00. The snow was beautiful. Big snow flakes coming down fairly hard. This was our first snow of the year. It was about 2 inches. Wednesday it was in the 20’s. On Saturday I got dressed like an Eskimo to go for my walk. However it was not cold. By the end of my walk I had taken off my hat, gloves and scarf and unzipped my jacket. It got up to 71 degrees in the afternoon. Other than the one afternoon of snow, it has not felt like winter at all.

Saturday Night Mom and I enjoyed our Christmas present. We attended My Fair Lady at the Kennedy Center is Washington DC. The Kennedy Center is a very large performing arts center. In addition to the opera house, they have several other stages and performing area. If fact they have a free concert every night at 6:00 PM. When we got there an Asian performing group was giving a concert. The “music” was interesting, but not appealing to us. We went outside and enjoyed the view for Arlington, George Town and a bit of the Washington Mall.

When we got to our seats Mom made me promise not to sing along. It was hard, but I was mostly good.

The performance was very good. There is something about seeing it live with an audience that brings energy and excitement. Somehow there is a different dimension with a live performance. Eliza had a beautiful voice. Henry Higgins was also very good. I really enjoyed the choreography and the staging was very, very creative.

Although I remembered the songs, I had forgotten much of the dialog. Henry Higgins was much more egotistical and selfish that I remembered.

Mom and I haven’t gone on too many dates lately. This was a FUN date!

Inside the Kennedy Center outside the opera hall before the performance. The Asian band was playing in the far end. We went out the doors to the left to look at the lights of the surrounding cities.
On the balcony of the Kennedy Center looking over the Potomac River to the buildings of Arlington.

Mom and I are in our seats. Mom is happy because I promised not to sing along.

The stage before the first act.

The excited couple on their date. Intermission of My Fair Lady
WES News
I spent a number of hours resolving payment issues from our buyer and also from our evil landlord. I believe we have things pretty much resolve. Unfortunately we have to be the landlord for the company to whom we subleased part of our facility. The sublease is up in January 2022. Hopefully all will go smoothly for the next two years.

The new owner wants me to do sales for him. He is disappointed that the production work we did for Abbott has gone to $0. He would like me to get it going again. It appears that there are technical issues with the product and they have stopped production.

Family NewsIn My Fair Lady, Alfred P. Doolittle sings I’m getting married in the morning. We thought our Keri could be singing, “I am having a baby in a couple of weeks”. It is hard to believe she is that close.

Love you all,
Dad

Elder Nelson - New Senior Missionaries and a Party on the Farm

Dear Family, Mission News I spent a fair amount of time preparing for the arrival of two senior couples. They have assignments that are very vague. They don’t really have anyone that supervises their work. The mission president is too busy with the junior missionaries to even know what they are doing. The stake presidents and bishops are likewise preoccupied their high priority responsibilities. Much is left up to the senior missionaries to find and create good things to do. The last two couples that came floundered for a couple of months before they engaged productively in the work. It was very frustrating for them. I am working with the stake presidents under the direction of President Caplin to make sure there is direction and responsibilities for these couples when they arrive. I want them to hit the ground running. I spent about 5-6 hours sending a bike home for an elder that had to go home early. Picking up the bike, helmet and lights from three different location...

Sister Nelson - Happy Birthday Olivia and Malia

Dear Family, Another good week has raced by with birthdays, transfers, teaching with the missionaries, and baptisms. And I am sitting here trying to remember everything. Monday was a long day. Garn was out talking with missionaries talking about their phones and usage. He has been tasked with coming up with a mission plan for the wise/righteous use of technology as well as checking with the missionaries about their device usage as it shows up on the reports from Salt Lake. It has been a fast learning curve going from knowing how to makes phone calls, texting, checking emails etc. to knowing how to conduct audits of the phones, transfer sim cards from phone to phone, find lost data, and fix broken phones. I was trying to get bills with problems paid, our senior dinner assignments for the mission home get together sent out, and answering the front office phone. Tuesday was another office day. We were trying to things ready for zone conferences. We take all of the mail for the zones...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...
