Sister Nelson - New Years and Happy Birthday Elizabeth

Dear Family,

This has been a fun week--In the office two days, out one, and back in for two. But it is hard to keep track of the day of the week when the schedule is so different.

Monday was a day to try and get things caught up. With all of the extra activities and things that we have been doing in December, some of the monthly reports have been put on the back burner. I was supposed to listen to a webinar but could never get connected. Luckily we will get a printed copy which is a good thing because it is all about our upcoming audit. One more thing to deal with!

At 4 we left for a baptism that was being held in Warrenton which is the far reaches of the mission. It was a baptism of a brother of an elder who we met in San Jose before we left on our mission. Did you follow that? We had met the family last spring when we went to meet up with Elder Seeley after he came home. It was Elder Seeley’s brother who was being baptized. He had left the church for some reason and was coming back and it was so wonderful to see the joy in the family because their son was back. What a blessing the Atonement of Christ is. The family invited us to their home afterwards for dinner and it was good to visit with them for a minute.

Tuesday was another day to try and catch up. But with it being New Year’s Eve the office couples decided to go to David’s restaurant to see David and be a support for him. Holidays are a hard time for him. We left the office about 4:30 to beat the rush. He goes overboard treating us well. He brought a couple free appetizers of orange fried shrimp for us. Then we all had our entrĂ©e. One of the couples likes meso soup, so David brought them a take-out order so they could have some for later. Dad had sushi and David brought out a plate of California sushi for him. Then he does his thing with the dry ice and hot water that makes fog go all over. After we ate our main course he brought out ice cream for everyone and then gave roses to the ladies. David’s brother (the owner) usually comes out to say hi and thank us for helping his brother. Sometimes I feel a little guilty having David bringing us so much free food, but he so enjoys doing it. We then came home and crashed. No waiting up until midnight for us.

The office was closed on Wednesday, but we stopped by for a short visit to do a few things. Another couple were there working as well. We had just gotten back from picking up a check that an apartment complex had mailed to the occupants (elders). I don’t know why they would mail it to them when the mission office pays all of the bills. After dropping off the check at the office and checking out some emails there, we went home to get ready for the senior get together that evening—we were in charge of the event.

We got to the church at 4 to set up and then had a devotional/testimony meeting at 5. A couple of the missionary couples will be leaving in early March and we may not have a chance to hear their feelings about their missions. It was good to be able to share. Then we had dinner. We supplied the ham and they did the rest. After dinner we played our traditional Pictionary. Not that I want to admit it, but the Elders won. I can’t believe it. NEVER in all of the years that we have played have the boys beat the girls! They did cheat a bit, but even with that the girls have never lost. I don’t know what went wrong.

The days off are gone and we are back to the regular schedule. I am getting really earnest in my efforts to get caught up. I brought home the credit card stuff to get reconciled and worked for a couple of hours. It does feel good to get closer to getting caught up.

Friday we got into the office a little early to get a jump on things. I did get closer to getting things done, but there is always new stuff to get done. If I were faster or smarter or both this could be easier. Oh well, the Lord doesn’t always call the best qualified for a job, just a willing person. We worked until about 5:30 and then locked up the office.

Saturday we chose a 9 am baptism to attend and, of course, it was way out in Gainsville—40 minutes with no traffic. We had to stop by the office on the way there to pick up the mail to take out there. The baptism was wonderful. The mother and daughter who were baptized were lead to the church by the grandmother. She had come to visit the family in the Oct/Nov time period and had the missionaries come to the home to read the Book of Mormon with them. The truths of the book touched their hearts and they were baptized yesterday. We decided to do our grocery shopping on the way home. Since we were going to a different WalMart Dad asked me to use the GPS and help him get there. He is getting pretty good with knowing how to get places without using the GPS so when I told him which way to go he didn’t think the GPS was right and went the way he thought we should go. Often times he does know how to get there and goes a different way than the GPS shows. There are several ways to get places and we know because the GPS NEVER takes us home the same way it takes us to a place. In this case, however, we took a scenic root and then consulted the GPS again. It wasn’t too bad and we didn’t have to see very much extra of Virginia. We only had a little grocery shopping to do and Dad said we did our grocery shopping in less time than it took us for our scenic tour. Not true, but we were speedy with the shopping.

We got home and got things unloaded all before noon. I needed to pick up a prescription and went to do that. I dropped of the prescription just as they were closing for lunch and they told me it would be done in an hour. I hated the thought of driving home just to turn around and come back. I decided to browse a little and then go back to the pharmacy. As the time drew near I thought how easy it was to pick up “nice” things that I didn’t really need just be being in the store a little longer. If I wasn’t careful the prescription could get to be really expensive. I was good and I made it out of the store with our bank account still intact and the prescription.

I came home and began working on the talk that I have to give in church on the 12th. I was non, however, in the mood to write a 5 minute talk, so I fighting it all evening. I have a very rough copy of it now and will spend the rest of the week trying to refine it.

Today we started our 9 am church and getting up it was wonderful. I can’t believe how much more we got done today. I may have a greater chance of getting my letter done on time.

Church was good today and we enjoyed the testimonies. It seemed a little different to see two new bishopric counselors sitting next to the bishop and then to have the former 1st counselor stand up at the end of sacrament meeting to take care of the stake business as a high counselor.

Know that we love you and pray for you daily.

Love,
Mom

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - New Senior Missionaries and a Party on the Farm

Dear Family, Mission News I spent a fair amount of time preparing for the arrival of two senior couples. They have assignments that are very vague. They don’t really have anyone that supervises their work. The mission president is too busy with the junior missionaries to even know what they are doing. The stake presidents and bishops are likewise preoccupied their high priority responsibilities. Much is left up to the senior missionaries to find and create good things to do. The last two couples that came floundered for a couple of months before they engaged productively in the work. It was very frustrating for them. I am working with the stake presidents under the direction of President Caplin to make sure there is direction and responsibilities for these couples when they arrive. I want them to hit the ground running. I spent about 5-6 hours sending a bike home for an elder that had to go home early. Picking up the bike, helmet and lights from three different location...

Sister Nelson - Baptism

Dear Family, We send our love and support to Amanda and Lance and family. We were sorry to hear of Amanda’s grandmother Kenney on Saturday. She will be happier being with her eternal companion, but she will still me missed a great deal by her family. Know that we love you and are praying for you. It seems that we stay pretty busy, but looking back over the week it’s hard to figure out what took up so much of the time. We got to the office on Monday a little earlier than usual and that gave me a little bit of quiet time to concentrate. Then I spent the entire day trying to get some of the vendors who had changed addresses or had sold their properties to someone else approved and updated. I do the vendor approval so rarely that I still am not comfortable with the process of getting them set up and approved and then set up for payments in IMOS. I also had more calls from the missionaries about when they would be funded than I have had since I got here combined. They would ask if t...
