Sister Nelson - February 16

February 16, 2020

Monday February 10th We both got up and went to the office because I was hoping to have an answer from the auditor as to when he was coming. There was no email but a couple of things that I did before I was ready to go home and rest. We left for home about 11. It is good to have that settled. After lunch I was ready for a nap, but Dad was ready to go back to the office for an hour or so, but it was longer than that.

Tuesday was another day of toughing it out. I tried to not cough any more than I absolutely and drank a lot of water to sooth the cough as well as used a lot of cough drops. We lasted until about 2 before giving up and going home. I got a call from the auditor at home and we decided that Monday the 24th at 10 am would be the start of our audit. When we got home we just sit around and do nothing.

Wednesday was Olivia’s day to get her tonsils out. Lance sent of a picture her in the hospital bed and she looked so little and scared with red eyes from crying a little. It made me cry just looking at the picture. We were so grateful to hear the news that things went well and that she was able to go home later that day. One of the MLS missionary couples stopped by to drop off a box of Valentine chocolates for the office. We did our last office cleaning for the month of February today.

Thursday we had a zoom meeting for the whole mission where the mission counselor talked to the missionaries about how to handle stress. One of the topics he talked about was the importance of gratitude. Not only is it important to our spiritual and mental health, it is also important to our physical health. There are hormones released into the body when we feel gratitude. He did a much better job than I am doing, but it was very good. After Brother Barker was through, Dad did a presentation on collecting the conversion stories of the converts. He, as always, did a great job and ended the zoom meeting a spiritual note. We lasted all day today before going home.

Friday was a Happy Birthday to Keri. How grateful we are to have her as part of our family. It was also Valentine’s Day so it was a good day. We were able to get a full day at work today. The office was pretty quiet with only a few of the office people there for a great part of the day. It was finally Friday for real. I don’t know if it was we didn’t go to church on Sunday and my days were all mixed up because of that or not, but I felt like I had five Fridays!

Saturday was a day to get a few things done at home and take it easy at the same time. We went to a baptism at 4 pm and enjoyed that a lot. There was a Valentine dance put on by one of the senior couples for their ward, but we were running out of steam and we still needed to go order the food for the mission tour senior missionary dinner with Elder Johnson. We got the food ordered and went home to get ready for Sunday.

Sunday was a wonderful sacrament meeting. We had a sister returning from her mission to Australia, Mandarin speaking. She did such a beautiful job testifying of Jesus and the Atonement and of Heavenly Father’s love for us. She also talked about she had turned to the Lord and he had shown her her weaknesses, but over the course of her mission Heavenly Father had made them her strengths. The examples she used were how awkward and scary it was to do street contacting when she first arrived, but by the end of her mission she loved talking to everyone on the streets. When she first arrived and she had to teach in Mandarin, she said a few things when teaching—usually the same little phrase. By the end of her mission she could say what she wanted to in Chinese and teach the gospel. Again, she said things better than I am, but it is late and I am ready for bed.

We had a missionary meeting in one of the stakes down south of us that President Caplin wanted Dad to go and represent President Caplin. Dad wasn’t told that—just asked to attend. We, therefore, didn’t sit on the stand, but that turned out well because when President Caplin arrived he was asked to sit on the stand and then he was there to do part of the presentation.

We love you and pray for you daily.

Love,
Mom

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - New Senior Missionaries and a Party on the Farm

Dear Family, Mission News I spent a fair amount of time preparing for the arrival of two senior couples. They have assignments that are very vague. They don’t really have anyone that supervises their work. The mission president is too busy with the junior missionaries to even know what they are doing. The stake presidents and bishops are likewise preoccupied their high priority responsibilities. Much is left up to the senior missionaries to find and create good things to do. The last two couples that came floundered for a couple of months before they engaged productively in the work. It was very frustrating for them. I am working with the stake presidents under the direction of President Caplin to make sure there is direction and responsibilities for these couples when they arrive. I want them to hit the ground running. I spent about 5-6 hours sending a bike home for an elder that had to go home early. Picking up the bike, helmet and lights from three different location...

Sister Nelson - Baptism

Dear Family, We send our love and support to Amanda and Lance and family. We were sorry to hear of Amanda’s grandmother Kenney on Saturday. She will be happier being with her eternal companion, but she will still me missed a great deal by her family. Know that we love you and are praying for you. It seems that we stay pretty busy, but looking back over the week it’s hard to figure out what took up so much of the time. We got to the office on Monday a little earlier than usual and that gave me a little bit of quiet time to concentrate. Then I spent the entire day trying to get some of the vendors who had changed addresses or had sold their properties to someone else approved and updated. I do the vendor approval so rarely that I still am not comfortable with the process of getting them set up and approved and then set up for payments in IMOS. I also had more calls from the missionaries about when they would be funded than I have had since I got here combined. They would ask if t...
