Elder Nelson - Coronavirus

Dear Family,

Mission NewsThis week we dealt with the effects of the corona virus. A few weeks ago the Church quarantined all of the missionaries in the Hong Kong Mission for two weeks. They sent them home to their families for two weeks. Then they reassigned them to other missions. Tuesday we received 2 Hong Kong missionaries. One was Cantonese speaking and he is working with the English elders. The other is Mandarin speaking and he is working with our Mandarin speaking elders.

Friday night we picked up 2 elders from the Mongolia Mission. These elders needed a place to stay overnight before going to their permanent assignments in the US. It was fun to hear how different the Mongolia Mission is. They can do NO proselyting. They don’t were suits and ties. They teach English 15 to 20 hours per week. If someone on the street asks if they are missionaries they say, “No, we are English teachers.” They get some of their teaching pool from the English classes, but most of their contacts come from members. There are 12,000 baptized members and about 1,000 are active. They do a lot of reactivation work. Baptisms are easy because it is difficult to say no in their culture. As a result, retention is a challenge.

It was also fun learn about the food and customs of Mongolia.

The Church was afraid if there was an outbreak of the Corona Virus that the government would shut down the boards and the missionaries would be trapped in the country with poor medical care. The 30 or so English missionaries were transferred home or released. The 30 or so Mongolian missionaries stayed in the country as did the mission president. The mission president’s family went home.

Tuesday I went to a district council in Ashburn. I really enjoyed these missionaries. Thursday I attended the Annandale Zone. Mom went with me this time and that made it more fun. Going to district councils is the most fun thing I do. I really admire and enjoy the young missionaries. I do a little 15 minutes of “training” on remembering the mercies of the Lord with journals and new member conversion stories. The President is asking the missionaries to help new members write their conversion stories. I hope to go to 6 more district councils in the next three weeks.

Fun StuffDerek visited Tuesday night for about 3.5 hours. As always it was a delightful visit. We will miss his visits after we leave.

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...

Sister Nelson - 7/28/2019

Dear Family, Here it is another week and almost another month gone by. It has been a good week. Monday we wanted to get the car back in to get the A/C checked. When we had it in on Saturday it didn’t misbehave and it is hard to fix something that doesn’t appear to be broken. After riding in a car without air conditioning for over an hour in 100+ weather on Sunday, Dad was pretty motivated to get it fixed. We drove to the office and it didn’t blow hot air, but neither did it blow cool air. About 10 when things had warmed up a bit, he went out to drive the car to see if the air conditioner was working and it was not. We decided to drive it to the repair shop and hoped it would still not be working by the time we got there. We were lucky—it still didn’t work by the time we got there. Pretty strange to be hoping that our car wouldn’t work, but with the weather as hot and humid as it had been and the promises of all the native Virginians that August was even worse we wanted a depend...
