Elder Nelson - Transfer Week

Dear Family,

Mission News
Monday, we got up at 3:30 to take Elder Ward to the airport on his way to Ecuador. The president interviewed 10 departing missionaries in the mission office. This brought a lot of missionaries to the office. It is fun to hang out with the missionaries, but it is hard to get anything done.

In the evening we had dinner at the mission home with the 20 new missionaries. Mom and I take their pictures with our phones and the missionaries message their parents.

Tuesday is Transfer Day – I am responsible for lunch, but I delegate it totally to Sister Chesbrough. Mom and I help out putting things out on the tables and she does most everything else. She just loves to cook and that’s great by me. After lunch Mom and I took 3 Visa Waiters to the airport

Wednesday, we took the Nielsons out to dinner. They went home on Friday. They are great people and we enjoyed them and learned much from them.

Thursday, I delivered phones to some of the visa-waiters. In the afternoon the mission president asked Mom to be a part of an interview with a new sister missionary that had an unresolved issue. For Mom this was a very spiritual and sacred experience as she was asked to bear witness of the atonement of Christ and its power to cleanse our souls completely.

Friday, Mom and I delivered rent and utility checks to an apartment. The mail failed us again so we had to deliver the checks. However, we were able to sign up for direct deposit, so we won’t have to rely on the US Postal Service – which is awful out here.

Saturday, we took a sister to the airport. We also did taxes. This was awful because we took money out of our retirement to remodel the kitchen and a lot of money out to help “right the ship” at WES. As a result, we owe a ton of taxes. With my partner’s consent, we will get WES to help us out.

Fun Stuff
Derek will be here tomorrow night for a business trip. Sunday, Derek and family come!

I have been re-reading an autobiography of F. Enzio Busche, an emeritus member of the 70. He was the first German-borne general authority. I am really enjoying reading about his conversion story and his early activity in the Church. I think some of you have read it.

WES News
Time to drum up more sales.

Family News
March 8 - Lance and Amanda celebrated 16 years of marriage.

Kent went shooting on Saturday with his friends. He shot well and had a good time. He went bowling that night and bowled 157. This morning he did breakfast at his place for a “bunch” of ward members.

Saturday Derek and family went to Wonder Works near Orlando.

Chelsea went to a school tech conference this week in Provo and found some things she wants to try out.

Kent and Chelsea will be here on the 29th when the cherry blossoms will be in full bloom.

Emma is off to Yosemite this week with school. The water falls should be terrific about now.

Olivia says school is awesome. Lance says that everything for Olivia is either awesome or epic.

Keri sent us this picture in a text with this explanation. “Elizabeth is on the train heading for Virginia. She says Grandma and Grandpa will be there and she’s going to work. Thought I’d give you a heads up.”
Love,
Dad

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...

Sister Nelson - 7/28/2019

Dear Family, Here it is another week and almost another month gone by. It has been a good week. Monday we wanted to get the car back in to get the A/C checked. When we had it in on Saturday it didn’t misbehave and it is hard to fix something that doesn’t appear to be broken. After riding in a car without air conditioning for over an hour in 100+ weather on Sunday, Dad was pretty motivated to get it fixed. We drove to the office and it didn’t blow hot air, but neither did it blow cool air. About 10 when things had warmed up a bit, he went out to drive the car to see if the air conditioner was working and it was not. We decided to drive it to the repair shop and hoped it would still not be working by the time we got there. We were lucky—it still didn’t work by the time we got there. Pretty strange to be hoping that our car wouldn’t work, but with the weather as hot and humid as it had been and the promises of all the native Virginians that August was even worse we wanted a depend...
