Elder Nelson - Mission Tour

Dear Family,

Mission News
This was a busy week. Elder Allen Haynie of the Seventy toured our mission. We really enjoyed him. He spent a lot of time discussing how to find new friends to teach. He made it sound fun and natural. Much of the discussion reiterated the principles Elder Uchtdorf discussed in the last general conference. We need to love the Lord first and then loving your neighbor follows naturally.

Mom got excited about memorizing scriptures from the talk given at the mission tour. When you call in she will recite a few for you. 😊

One of the things that makes the mission tour busy is that the office missionaries had to prepare 3 meals. Two of them for over 100 missionaries and leaders. Buying the food, preparing the food, setting the food out and then cleaning up all takes time and energy. While hauling the food around on Thursday, I tweaked my back. I thought, “Oh no! I am going to be just like my unfortunate siblings!!!” Friday I felt like an old man, but today I am about “back” to normal.

Fun Stuff
This week was so busy that it was really fun to kick back Saturday and do very little. We did go to a baptism, Mom did some financial office work and I did WES things for a few hours but we did find time to relax and it felt good. This morning we got up late. I don’t remember the time, but we had to hurry to make 11:30 Church on time.

Our renters are taking good care of the house, or so say our “spies”. They put in 3 planter boxes in the garden and are growing vegetables. Mom has wanted planter boxes for several years and now we have some.

One of the secrets to a happy mission is good air conditioning set at 68 degrees. It is warming up here and the humidity is significant. We enjoy coming home to a cool house.

WES News
If all goes well, we should sign the buyout agreement of my partner this week.

As somewhat usual the next two months look good, but we don’t know where the sales will come from later this summer.

Family News
We have a happy new driver in the family.

Kent’s ward had an activity at the shooting range. Kent hit the skeet or what ever you call them 21 out of 25.

Somehow Mom called Lance at 2:30 AM. Lance did not answer, but he called the next day on the way to work to see if everything was OK.

Love,
Dad

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...

Sister Nelson - 7/28/2019

Dear Family, Here it is another week and almost another month gone by. It has been a good week. Monday we wanted to get the car back in to get the A/C checked. When we had it in on Saturday it didn’t misbehave and it is hard to fix something that doesn’t appear to be broken. After riding in a car without air conditioning for over an hour in 100+ weather on Sunday, Dad was pretty motivated to get it fixed. We drove to the office and it didn’t blow hot air, but neither did it blow cool air. About 10 when things had warmed up a bit, he went out to drive the car to see if the air conditioner was working and it was not. We decided to drive it to the repair shop and hoped it would still not be working by the time we got there. We were lucky—it still didn’t work by the time we got there. Pretty strange to be hoping that our car wouldn’t work, but with the weather as hot and humid as it had been and the promises of all the native Virginians that August was even worse we wanted a depend...
