Elder Nelson - Hot Under the Collar, a Lesson I Remembered

The air conditioner on our car is flaking out.  Sometimes it works great and sometimes not so great.  We took it into the shop yesterday (Saturday) for them to look at it.  Of course it worked great, so they could not fix it.  We borrowed a mission car so we could drop our car off at the shop and still get around.

Today, I wanted to take the mission car to church just in case.  But I was over-ruled by Mom.  I left after sacrament meeting to meet with our friend David and to take him to his work.  Of course after 5 minutes the air conditioning in our car quit completely.  The thermometer in our car said the outside temperature was 101 and we had our normal East Coast humidity.

As I drove the half hour to David's house, I was getting hot under the collar because of the heat and humidity, but also because this problem could have been avoided it only someone listened to me.

I was feeling very sorry for myself on the way back.  Then I had to smile as I thought of the thousand times I told Keri, "Choose to be happy".  We can't control the circumstances, but we can control our attitude.

Well, chose to be happy.  I smiled and sweated all the way back to the apartment.  I was happy (and sweaty and hot!).  When I got back to the apartment, I cooled down a minute, I washed my face and I happily picked Mom up at Church in the cool mission car.  Mom was very understanding.

And now Mom and I are living happily ever after!

Love,
Dad

Elder Nelson - New Senior Missionaries and a Party on the Farm

Dear Family, Mission News I spent a fair amount of time preparing for the arrival of two senior couples. They have assignments that are very vague. They don’t really have anyone that supervises their work. The mission president is too busy with the junior missionaries to even know what they are doing. The stake presidents and bishops are likewise preoccupied their high priority responsibilities. Much is left up to the senior missionaries to find and create good things to do. The last two couples that came floundered for a couple of months before they engaged productively in the work. It was very frustrating for them. I am working with the stake presidents under the direction of President Caplin to make sure there is direction and responsibilities for these couples when they arrive. I want them to hit the ground running. I spent about 5-6 hours sending a bike home for an elder that had to go home early. Picking up the bike, helmet and lights from three different location...

Sister Nelson - Happy Birthday Olivia and Malia

Dear Family, Another good week has raced by with birthdays, transfers, teaching with the missionaries, and baptisms. And I am sitting here trying to remember everything. Monday was a long day. Garn was out talking with missionaries talking about their phones and usage. He has been tasked with coming up with a mission plan for the wise/righteous use of technology as well as checking with the missionaries about their device usage as it shows up on the reports from Salt Lake. It has been a fast learning curve going from knowing how to makes phone calls, texting, checking emails etc. to knowing how to conduct audits of the phones, transfer sim cards from phone to phone, find lost data, and fix broken phones. I was trying to get bills with problems paid, our senior dinner assignments for the mission home get together sent out, and answering the front office phone. Tuesday was another office day. We were trying to things ready for zone conferences. We take all of the mail for the zones...

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...
