Elder Nelson - Merry Christmas!

Dear Family,

Mission NewsSunday night and Monday night we had a Christmas Devotional for all of the missionaries. Half came on Sunday night and half on Monday night. Mom was in charge of the treats after the devotionals. I was in charge of the hot chocolate. It is a bit more difficult than you think to provide hot chocolate for 100 people.

Christmas Treats provided by the senior missionaries. Some of the mail was put on the stage for the missionaries to pick up. We had about 600 packages for Christmas. I am responsible for distributing the mail. I am glad Christmas is over.
The Devotionals were very, very nice. The music was provided by the missionaries (mostly) and it was very good.

Saturday we attended the baptism of a young college graduate in Woodbridge. There were 14 senior missionaries and 6 young missionaries at the baptism. There were 3 friends who also attended.

Fun StuffThey weather has been very nice. Sunny and warm-ish – 60 degrees.

Christmas day as we were fixing breakfast our Spanish sisters, Sister Takahashi and Sister Young stopped by. We invited them for breakfast and we had a delightful time. We fixed a couple of dishes for the Christmas dinner with the senior missionaries. We had a delicious dinner and a very nice visit. We came home and watched “The Other Side of Heaven 2” about Elder Groberg first time as mission president in Tonga. He had a very different kind of experience that our president. We liked it. In between times we visited with you all.

Vennard, Zabriskie, Gowan, Cook, Larsen, Nelson at the Senior Christmas get together.
The Vennards, who are very well off, gave all of the Seniors a picture of Joseph and Mary (12x14” nicely framed). They got the artwork from Salt Lake and had it printed on canvas and mounted in nice frames.

I usually have about a 5 pound Christmas. However this year I think I pretty well held my weight steady despite many, many sweet temptations.

WES NewsWe are still cleaning up a few issues. We should receive a partial payment from the company that bought the business in January. The final payment will come in June.

Family NewsAll seemed to have a had a Merry Christmas. Chelsea was at Lance’s. Chelsea was the game organizer including a Spooky scavenger hunt. Kent and Lindsey were at Lindsey’s brothers place in Cedar City. McKay arrived late from the Hawaii (BYU football game) on Christmas day. The girls opened their presents on the 26th. After Christmas Derek and family are going exploring in Louisiana, Arkansas and Alabama.

Love you all,

Dad

Elder Nelson - Family Day and History Symposium

Dear Family, Mission News Monday Elder Larsen and I went to the Japanese restaurant where David works. We are still trying to get him to come to Church, but he did not make it today. He has a substance abuse problem that we would like to help him with. On Tuesday and Wednesday I went to Woodbridge and Annandale zone interviews. While the president was interviewing the elders, I was going over device audit procedures with the elders who were waiting. I learned/observed a couple of things: I need to come up with a plan to pull mission owned devices out of the field. The missionaries will use the devices they have purchased and brought into the field. There are a couple of issues with this. First it is not obvious how to store all of the data on the phone to an area safe place in the “cloud”. 90% of the data is stored on the area book which is a cloud software. The remaining 10% is not so easily saved so new missionaries coming into the area can have it. Second, on exchanges missi...

Elder Nelson - Little Miracle

Dear Family, Mission News One of our visa waiters needed to go to Atlanta to get his visa for Mexico. Our alarm went off at 3:55AM to get him to the Dulles Airport by 6:00AM. We picked him up from the airport and got him home by about 10:30 PM. It was a long day. We planned to take a nap, but we were too busy. The elder’s name is Giovani Garcia. His father was baptized in Guatemala, moved to Texas, married and had children. Normally getting a visa to Mexico is not hard, but Elder Garcia was here for two transfers. Of the 117 missions in the US he was assigned here. Of the 10 Spanish units we have in the mission, he was assigned to a ward whose membership includes the missionary that baptized his father in Guatemala. This brother was somewhat less active and Elder Garcia has helped him become active again. The Lord works in mysterious ways his wonders to perform. We got up this morning at 4:53AM to take him to the airport to fly to Mexico City. The mail is heavy and we in the of...

Sister Nelson - 7/28/2019

Dear Family, Here it is another week and almost another month gone by. It has been a good week. Monday we wanted to get the car back in to get the A/C checked. When we had it in on Saturday it didn’t misbehave and it is hard to fix something that doesn’t appear to be broken. After riding in a car without air conditioning for over an hour in 100+ weather on Sunday, Dad was pretty motivated to get it fixed. We drove to the office and it didn’t blow hot air, but neither did it blow cool air. About 10 when things had warmed up a bit, he went out to drive the car to see if the air conditioner was working and it was not. We decided to drive it to the repair shop and hoped it would still not be working by the time we got there. We were lucky—it still didn’t work by the time we got there. Pretty strange to be hoping that our car wouldn’t work, but with the weather as hot and humid as it had been and the promises of all the native Virginians that August was even worse we wanted a depend...
